Clos de Verger is a Premier Cru climat of the Pommard appellation in the Cote de Beaune. Wines made from grapes grown within the climat may claim the Pommard Premier Cru title and also cite the Clos de Verger name on their labels. The Premier Cru vineyards of Pommard run in a narrow belt between cooler, exposed sites on 1300ft (400m) hilltops and the very fertile, flatter land below. Pommard's Pinot Noir vines are at their best when grown in shallow, mineral-rich soil with good drainage – precisely the kind of terroir found on the mid-slopes of the Cote d'Or escarpment. There are variations in the soil make-up even within the Pommard Premier Cru vineyards, from the deeper, richer alluvial soils on the lower slopes, through the classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils on the mid-slopes, to marl and brown soil in the higher sites. The more 'masculine' style of many Pommard wines is often attributed to the presence of iron in the local soils and to the mineral-rich clays that are particularly prevalent here.
