"The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is everything a great wine should be. This is an expansive, spectacularly ripe wine endowed with layers of perfumed dark fruit, sweet tobacco, new leather and spices. A brooding, structured beauty, the wine needs some serious bottle age to show at its best, but it is already pretty stunning. According to Abbruzzese 1999 represents another step up in quality as the estate’s vineyards had begun to acquire some age at this point. Certainly this seems true in the Riserva, but I don’t perceive as marked a difference from previous vintages in the regular Brunello (see below). Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021."

Tenuta Valdicava produces some of the finest Brunello on the planet, ranging from the Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello Valdicava to the revered single vineyard Riserva Madonna del Piano.  The Riserva was the first single vineyard wine to be produced in Montalcino in 1977.

Located in the Montosoli region of Montalcino, the estate has been producing 100% Sangiovese based wine since 1968.  With only 10 hectares (~20 acres) under vine, owner and winemaker Vincenzo Abbruzzese, perhaps the most elite and exacting of the region’s vintners, micro manages his vines and grapes, exposing them to maximum sunshine and airflow in order to avoid rot.  The wines are aged in large Slovonian oak casks, providing the optimal oak balance.

Whether it be the normale Brunello Valdicava or the revered Riserva Madonna del Piano, the wine’s hallmark is a finessed balance between the power of the fruit, the high acidity that works so well with food and perfumed notes, allowing the wine to age almost effortlessly.  The power of the wine, according to Vincenzo, comes from lower yields and a high skin to pulp ration, translating into a wine with deep purple color.  The fermentation process extracts lots of polyphenols from the Sangiovese thick skins.  It’s almost impossible to fathom a wine that displays powerful yet refined tannins simultaneously as the 2006, 2004 and 2001 vintage.  Somehow, Vincenzo manages to extract the best.

While the Brunello Valdicava and the Riserva use the same grapes, the former is released five years after harvest while the latter has six years under its belt.  The Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino is a blend of grapes from up to five of Abbruzzese’s vineyards, allowing him to choose the best grapes from any given vineyard to create the best balance possible
