"Deep saturated red color with purple edges. The bouquet has everything that shouts Tuscany in a glass: warm raspberry and cassis paste, ripe enough to insinuate sweetness without being overdone, floral and spicy in an elegant way. Palate has layers of perfumed fruit and spices that prolong given the sticky tannins ending in a medium finish that is delicious. Acidity while refreshing is dialed a bit higher in this vintage than in '08. 94+`

The Tua Rita estate was purchased in 1984 by Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio Bisti. When Rita and Virgilio arrived, they decided to take the road less travelled, planting their vineyards exclusively with cabernet and merlot grapes. Their desire was to make a unique wine with great personality that would stand apart from everything that had been produced in Suvereto thus far. Over the course of a few years, the wine became famous throughout the world, and its price increased significantly. Tua Rita is a relatively small operation, which allows the two owners to dedicate great attention to the land and the winemaking process.

Initially sized at 15 hectares, the estate was blessed with iron and zinc-rich clayey soils and 100 metres of elevation. Subsequent land purchases have extended the estate size to 32 ha, 20 of which are planted to vine. The estate was initially planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, both used in the production of a Bordeaux-type blend. An extremely hard winter in 1985 led to replantings at high density -- 8 to 10,000 vines/ha -- and all subsequent additions to the estate were similarly planted. Vines on the estate are spur-cordon trained and are overseen by the viticulturalist and enologist, Dr. Stefano Chioccioli.

The Merlot produced by the estate is a monovarietal that is named "Redigaffi" after a stream that courses through the property. The Merlot got its start when two left over barriques of Merlot were bottled unblended. The grapes for the wine are manually harvested and, after an initial selection in the vineyard, is transported in crates to the winery. The clusters are placed on a vibrating belt where a second selection is conducted and after which the grapes are destemmed and the individual berries placed into a conical, temperature-controlled vats for fermentation. Fermentation occurs over 25-30 days during which time pumping-over and punch-down activities are performed in order to maintain contact between the must and cap.

After vinification the must is lightly pressed and the juice flows down into barriques that reside in a sub-cellar room. The wine is aged on its lees for 18 months in 100% new French barriques after which it is bottled and aged for 6 months before being placed on the market. Each year, the winery produces a little less than 40,000 bottles, of which Redigaffi averages 9,000 bottles. Many winemakers, including those who work just miles from Suvereto, have tried to replicate Tua Rita's secrets without success.

Redigaffi has, in fact, nothing in common with the fruity Merlot that you can find elsewhere. The company looked to the French as a model and imported the practice of barrique ageing. On the nose, Redigaffi has strong but not excessive aromas of mature fruit, and more subtle notes of rust, leather, wet soil and graphite. In the mouth, the wine is fleshy and juicy, with a good acidity and well-measured tannins. The finish is elegant, full-bodied, and long lasting.

Tua Rita's Redigaffi has received early and ongoing acclaim. It was the wine of the year in the 2002 Guide Espresso. Robert Parker called the 1999 vintage "as close to perfection as a wine can get" and then made perfection a reality in the 2000 vintage.

This is one of the standard bearers in the Italian Merlot march.

The philosophy and wines

You would expect that Tua Rita crafts Redigaffi (as one of the world's most renowned Merlots) in surroundings that signify and complement the wine’s prestige. You would expect, to be honest, a certain air of grandeur, a certain imposing reserve and majesty. Tua Rita, however, has resolutely kept itself outside that realm. In fact, so modest and unassuming is the "estate" that it might strike you as the home of, at the very most, a house of local importance - an impression that is undoubtedly heightened by the medieval origins of Suvereto.

Indeed, when Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti purchased the estate in 1984, they were essentially beginning a family story - not a fairytale-in-the-making. But their terroir had other ideas. Vintages from the early and mid-1990s of flagship Giusto di Notri (a Bordeaux-styled blend) and the aforementioned Redigaffi enjoyed critical success. Then came a 100-point rating for the 1997 Redigaffi - a reception that took both Redigaffi and this quiet Maremma cellar far beyond their village, precipitating a formal investment in the winery's vineyards and operations.

Though Redigaffi has been a cult catch since '97, turning in stellar vintage after stellar vintage, Tua Rita has remained true to its artisanal ideals and more remarkably, its modest demeanor. That spirit, in fact, prevails at Tua Rita, most notably in the persona of owner Rita Tua. Seemingly more a denizen of the kitchen than of the cellar, Rita Tua exudes the classic warmth that is the provenance of the Italian grandmother; the palpable human quality defining the estate is channeled through her ingratiating vitality.
