Borgogno is one of the oldest Barolo wine cellar, a well-known brand strictly connected to the history and events of this magic and inimitable wine.
Giacomo Borgogno winery was in fact established in 1761 by Bartolomeo Borgogno as a farm winery. At his death (1794) one of his four sons, Giacomo, started together with his nephew Eugenio Giuseppe, the winery activity, even became the supplier of the boarding school for the sons of the officials of the House of Savoy army in Racconigi in 1848.
Giacomo and his son managed the activity very well and the winery stated to grow producing high quality wines. Important events proofed the quality of Barolo Borgogno: in 1861 it was chosen for the official dinner celebration of the Italian Unification and at the beginning of the XX century Barolo Borgogno was served at the banquet held in honor of the Russian Czar Nicola II Romanov on his official visit to Racconigi Castel.
After the early death of Eugenio Giuseppe Borgogno was Giacomo Borgogno who left his studies at the age of 18 and started leading the winery and after him Cesare, the youngest of his children, took over the reins of the family activity. Borgogno winery saw a moment of great prosperity under the capable direction of Cesare: he strengthened the image of the winery as classic Barolo producer, the wine sales captured international markets and he stated a job of restoration, renovating and widening the vinification parts of the cellar.
Starting from those years Borgogno family had the idea to put aside 20% of Barolo greatest vintages bottles in order to let them aged in the cellar for 20 years and more.
Cesare Borgogno, recognized as one of the key figure in the modern history of Barolo and had also been appointed Knight of the Italian Republic, passed away in 1968 and the management of the business moved from his wife Maria Borgogno Chiavassa first, then to his niece Ida Chiavassa and her husband Franco Boschis. After Ida and Franco succeeded to the management of the cellar their sons: Cesare and Giorgio Boschis.
2008 is a mile-stone in the history of Borgogno: the winery was acquired by Farinetti Family who, in 2009, completed an important refurbishment of the main building in the center of Barolo, taking inspiration from old pictures and respecting the structure of the historical cellar.
The strength of Borgogno is the observance of the traditions passed down from generations of Borgogno and Boschis Family, and still today Farinetti family choses to respect old traditions in order to maintain Borgogno excellent production of great Langa red wines and above all of classic Barolo.
Today Borgogno property owns 13 hectares of vineyards, 9 of them are planted with Nebbiolo grape variety. In the cellar vinification process is 100% traditional: long maceration with submerged cap in order to ensure maximum extraction of the solid part of the grape and without using industrial yeasts. The ageing occurs in large Slavonian oak casks for long periods before releasing the wines on the market. This traditional wine-making process allows Barolo Borgogno to have unique structure and character, to have long ageing, preserving it perfectly for many years. Old vintages are still available nowadays and they still show rich organoleptic characteristics, typical of this great wine.
Borgogno produces traditional wines of Piedmont, such as Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Freisa, Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo, the flagship of the winery. 60.000 bottles of Barolo are produced each year divided in five different typologies: Barolo Borgogno, Barolo Liste, Barolo Cannubi, Barolo Fossati and Barolo Riserva. Last but not least a real specialty of Borgogno is Barolo Chianto produced following a secret recipe which has been handed down through generations. Borgogno only uses great vintages of Barolo in its Barolo Chinato.
