Castello dei Rampolla - "Vigna d'Alceo" 1999

"The monumental 1999 Vigna d'Alceo is a 20,000-bottle cuvee of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese aged in oak. It boasts an exceptionally provocative nose of liquid minerals, graphite, plums, creme de cassis, and cherry liqueur. It is fabulously concentrated yet remarkably light on its feet, with medium to full body, sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of flavor nuances. There is plenty of glycerin in this rich, but neither heavy nor overbearing effort. This is a thrilling tour de force! However, it requires cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. Bravo!"

Located in the heart of Chianti, the estate first made its name with the Sammarco, a Super Tuscan. The founder of Castello dei Rampolla, Alceo di Napoli Rampolla, was the foremost advocate of Cabernet Sauvignon in Tuscany. He endured a lot of criticism for advocating the synergy between the Panzano area of Chianti and Cabernet, but his position was vindicated with Sammarco, a wine comprised of predominately Cabernet Sauvignon. Paying homage to Alceo and his passion, the di Napoli introduced the Vigna d'Alceo (which means Alceo’s Vineyard).

While the Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco has become part of the Super-Tuscan establishment along the line of Ornellaia, Sassicaia and Solaia, the d’Alceo’s intense marriage of opulence and power has given it cult status, placing it in the realm of Masseto (100% Merlot produced by Ornellaia and cost much more than Ornellaia) and Messorio. No other in its class achieves such a stunning and provocative expression — delivering a lush density that belies the wine’s intricate and profoundly serious structure. The 2007 d’Alceo, arguably one of the finest d’Alceo to date, is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot. This is an exquisite, elegant wine that combines the potent, power-hungry nature of cult Cabernets, with a sleek and spicy dimension made possible with the addition of Petit Verdot — giving it a character that pure Cabernets simply cannot capture.
